Supported by the European Commission, the 3D-EM Network of Excellence has initiated a variety of training courses in Electron Microscopy (EM) for life sciences. With the aim to increase the general level of skills in state of the art technologies, 3D-EM partners are working closely together to set up a joint European curriculum.
Complementing and extending the well known, yet constantly over-subscribed EMBO course programme, the two level course programme (basic and advanced) focuses on practical applications in various aspects of EM such as electron tomography, cryo-EM and single particle analysis. In addition to hands-on training, the theoretical part of the course includes lectures, seminars and presentations given by experts in the field of Electron Microscopy.
This programme has been developed in cooperation with the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) and the European Microscopy Society (EMS). Various 3DEM partners contribute their specific expertise and extensive teaching experience.
Courses are being held in various partner institutions of 3D-EM across Europe. Participants will have the special opportunity to gain access to the various infrastructures and instrumentation available in some of the most prominent European research centers in the currently world-wide expanding field of Electron microscopy.
3D-EM training courses are open to all - notably young – scientists. Except for a registration fee of 200 Euro for some courses they are free of charge. Travel grants and/or a complete exemption from charge can be applied for.
For experienced researchers and postdocs holding a position at a European research institution, 3D-EM offers a fellowship programme in the field of structural biology and related fields (i.e. engineering, IT).

In the three years of the project (March 04 - February 07), 3 workshops on CEMOVIS and 20 courses with a total of more than 300 participants were held. All courses were positively evaluated by the participants.
