TEM TITAN KRIOS POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW
Dedicated to MPI of Biochemistry, MPIB, Department of Molecular Structural Biology
Situated in Martinsried, south-west of Munich, Germany, the MPIB (Max-Planck-Institute for Biochemistry) is one of the largest institutes within the Max Planck Society’s biomedical section, supporting 10 departments. The research focus of the institute might best be described as the examination of the structure, function and interaction of biological macromolecules (especially proteins), commencing with a single molecule, progressing to the cell and the organism as a whole.
The Department of Molecular Structural Biology headed by Wolfgang Baumeister is dedicated to the analysis of cellular structures and macromolecular assemblies in their native state with the transmission electron microscope. The department is equipped with state of the art facilities, including several high-end transmission electron microscopes for cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and especially cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET). One of the latest generation TEMs, the FEI TITAN KRIOS (80-300kV) will be installed in the upcoming months and this instrument, equipped with a 4k CCD camera will serve as a tool to establish a high-throughput acquisition pipeline for 2D and 3D single particle investigations at cryo-temperatures. It will be the first instrument of this type in the field and together with FEI Company we are seeking for a postdoctoral research fellow to establish a strong link between industry and science. The fellow should be dedicated to the advanced customer training on site and to build up his or her scientific career on a research project utilizing this microscope platform. Moreover, integrated into the research environment of the Department of Molecular Structural Biology the candidate should interact with FEI service and the FEI R&D department to exploit the full potential of cryo-EM approaches and to improve the efficiency of this system.
Candidates must have a PhD, preferably with postdoctoral experience in physics or life sciences and at least several years of experience in the field of transmission electron microscopy. Understanding of the physics of imaging is mandatory. The candidate should have good team working skills, be capable of analytical and innovative thinking, should be self motivated and should have a proven track record of communicating complex technical data.
We are offering a 2 year fellowship in the Department of Molecular Structural Biology and within FEI Company with the possibility of extension either in the scientific or in the industrial environment.
