Executive Summary of the Second Annual Report

The European “Network of Excellence” (NoE) 3D-EM brings together internationally recognized institutions in the field of electron microscopy in a European forum operating in various fields of structural research. The activities of the network focus on 3D imaging of macromolecules and molecular machines as well as the 3D imaging of cells and cell organelles. Towards the end of its second year, the 3D-EM Network passed its Mid-Term Review Meeting in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Project Meeting in Klosters, CH, from January 11 to 14, 2006. During the conference, members of the consortium presented the Network’s progress in the first two years of its existence to the EC Scientific Officer, Josefina Enfedaque, and the project’s Scientific Advisory Board members, Robert Glaeser (UC Berkley), René Imhof (Roche, Basel), David DeRosier (Brandeis University, Waltham), and Alasdair Stevens (NIH, Bethesda). After three days of intensive discussion in seminars, workshops, and poster sessions of the progress and future plans of the 3D-EM Network, the external advisors rated the overall project performance as excellent. In their evaluation, they identified the following highlights within the NoE.
